Time for a bonus installment in our How to Grow Chinese Vegetables Series! Today, we're talking about how to grow Daikon Radish, a tasty, mild, and sweet winter radish that we use a lot in our cooking. Daikon radish is a large, elongated white radish with a mild, sweet flavor and crisp texture. The root can be salted to remove excess moisture, sun-dried, and then seasoned, as in our Preserved Daikon Radish recipe. To plant daikon radish seeds, sow them inch deep about 1 inch apart in a straight line, with rows spaced 12-18 inches apart-farther apart for larger varieties. IDEAL GROWING CONDITIONS FOR Daikon Radish CLIMATE/WEATHER These radishes are frost tolerant plants, and will perform best when planted in late summer, when the soil is warm for germination and the temperatures cool as the plant matures. Like bok choy and napa cabbage, daikon radish can be plagued by Flea Beetles, which are very small, shiny black beetles that jump like fleas and eat tiny holes in the leaves. We hope you've enjoyed this post on how to grow daikon radishes, and our series on How to Grow Chinese Vegetables in general!
