As a result, the number of mainland Chinese billionaires on Forbes' World's Billionaires list fell for the third consecutive year. A total of 406 Chinese billionaires made the ranking, down from 495 a year ago and a record 626 in 2021. Still, mainland China has the second largest number of billionaires globally, behind only the U.S., which has 813 billionaires this year. Mainland Chinese billionaires now account for 15% of the world's billionaires and 9% of the total wealth of that group: globally there are 2,781 billionaires worth a collective $14.2 trillion. The richest Chinese billionaire for the fourth year in a row is bottled water and tea magnate Zhong Shanshan, the founder of Hong Kong-listed firm Nongfu Spring. He ranks as the 24th richest person in the world, down from the 15th richest last year. His fortune increased to $38.9 billion from $30.2 billion a year ago, helping him move up to China's No. 3 from No. 4 last year and become China's richest Internet billionaire after Zhang Yiming.
